Concussion Ensemble were an American post-rock group formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1992. It consisted of three drummers, one percussionist (playing bedpan, horseshoe, pipes and other found objects), two guitarists and a bass player. Their music was completely instrumental and placed a strong emphasis on rhythm. The ensemble was short lived, only releasing a single and this full-length album, which was distributed on cassette by Bim Skala Bim's label. Members went on to perform in Sugar with Bob Mould, and Morphine. Original sealed stock from 1993!

Introductions don’t get much more grand than this. Faulty Cognitions are a brand new quartet from San Antonio, TX, and they announce their arrival with a chiming, subtly melancholic guitar line - brand new yet instantly familiar. It’s soon joined by the dramatic boom of a rhythm section, deployed at mid-pace and opening up space for Chris Mason’s strident vocal melody to take charge of the song. “You know there’s something more,” he sings, confidently but wistfully, before suddenly the song (titled ‘Sun Sun Go Away’) explodes into life. Instantly you feel your blood rush into the flow of punkified rock’n’roll, and with this sudden payoff you just know that what follows is gonna be killer. It’s a soaring, addictive beginning to an album that only gets better from there. Faulty Cognitions formed following Mason’s relocation from Portland, OR, as he hooked up with bassist and long-term buddy Yole Centeno (Nocturnal Prose, Sacred Games, and other San Antonio punk favorites). Having racked up a CV including Shang-A-Lang and Low Culture, Mason was keen to get things up and running with a new band as soon as possible. Guitarist Nick Obregon (also of Nocturnal Prose) and Mike Nira were soon added to the lineup, and one swiftly recorded demo later, the newly cemented foursome began work on what would become ‘Somehow, Here We Are’, their debut album.

Some fruits are ripe for the taking, others were plucked while green and all too soon. Southern folk music and country & western, gut bucket blues and proto-rap rhymes, sloppy punk and abrasive noise attacks, hardcore breakdowns and emo whining, all of this gets coated with a hard candy shell of pop rock and 90's sentimental lo-fidelity production. This album should catapult Adam Void as a headliner at the next Reading Festival, Roskilde, Newport Folk Festival, and International Noise Conference. However, it will probably just be heard by a small handful of troubled souls and disappear into the digital realm with all the other momentary tastemakers that come and go with the algorithm's dispassionate whims. Either way, everyone is thankful to Almost Halloween Time Records for sending these sounds into the interdimensional ether like a golden record on a government op space scandal.

Hey stranger, do you like to stunt everyone by being the first to discover the next hot band? Well, imagine we've never met, but I just made you a mixtape of all the freshest tracks you could imagine, probably from a bunch of artists you've never heard of, and it will blow your mind. This isn't a pay-to-play streaming playlist. This is a labor of love; I asked the world if I could reach them to send me their songs over two months. During that time, the submission window was open to whoever saw it and was brave enough to fill out my form. Then, I agreed to make this mixtape as part of Cassette Week 2024 without ever listening to a submission until the window had closed at the end of September. I then have no choice but to take what has been submitted and craft it into a coherent mixtape with two cohesive sides that make sense together and have a flow and maybe even be trying to send a message. You're going to have to listen to find out.
