Riding the least likely commercial success of the 90s with Modern Rock chart topper "Pepper," Austin odd rockers Butthole Surfers returned to the studio in 1998 for the followup, After The Astronaut. Leaning further into experiments with electronics, hip-hop, acid grooves, and the otherwise unusual, the result is a dizzying orbital trip expanding the idea of what's possible in rock music.

Disputes between the Butthole Surfers and Capitol Records left the album unreleased, while the band regrouped and re-recorded some of the material for 2001's Weird Revolution, released through Hollywood Records. After The Astronaut collected dust, eventually developing a mythic status.

A quarter century later, Butthole Surfers are realizing their vision for After The Astronaut. Newly mixed by guitarist/producer Paul Leary, After The Astronaut corrects the record on the band's activity in the late 90s with a bold, idiosyncratic evolution of their sun-fried psychedelia.

Andrew Nolan invokes ill omen on Black Dogs

No stranger to the world of industrial noise, Toronto-based Andrew Nolan has been especially prolific lately, producing a slew of notable solo work alongside collaborations with artists like Refused, Full of Hell and The Body.

With a restrained minimalism, effective use of rich, analog synths, spatial mixing and expert pacing across its runtime, Black Dogs touches on industrial dub, hip-hop, drum & bass and downtempo electronic with assistance from Justin K Broadrick (GODFLESH) as JK FLESH, Metalheadz artist Gremlinz, and Sectra.

Drawing inspiration from Nolan's obsession with north English folklore, the album is named for the vicious spectral hounds that are believed to be the spirits of unbaptized babies. A menacing crescendo of dread, beat, and bass-heavy tracks, Black Dogs uses animal sounds, junk metal, and feedback as sonic building blocks to create its grim, menacing soundscapes.

Birdsong, if the birds were diesel locomotives being driven through a junkyard patrolled by boomboxes mounted on robot dogs. Each of the boomboxes has a self-help tape permanently loaded into the tape deck, but the tapes have been played so very many times that only one word in four is audible. The whirring of the robot dog's legs and the degradation of the tapes will only let out the occasional "actualization of real potential" or "manifesting" before they spring on any intruders.

So like that, but birdsong, get it?

"Duo EP" is the fruit of a collaboration between the Portland, OR based indie-rock bands Strange Pilgrim & Sunbathe. Josh Barnhart of Strange Pilgrim and Maggie Morris of Sunbathe have joined forces to rework three songs from each of their catalog into new duo versions - peeling back the layers and reimagining with album tracks with a palette of omnichords, drum machines, synthesizers, and guitars (of course!), all while bringing a newfound sense of discovery to the tracks.

The EP was recorded at home by the duo, mixed by Cory Gray (Old Unconscious, The Delines, Fronjentress) , and mastered by David Glasebrook (Michael Nau, Sugar Candy Mountain, Sandy’s). no wonder • なるほど is a collection of experimental ambient pieces by veteran Tokyo-based artist Nekomachi. Working entirely with a vintage Yamaha QY100 rather than modern computer-based tools, Nekomachi weaves field recordings, shimmering digital synths and chopped-up, glitched sequences into immersive and detailed sound worlds.

Abstract in form, the album blurs the boundaries of genre and mood, shifting from open and expansive to playful and quasi-rhythmic; from hypnotic and meditative to what could only be described as synthetic lounge jazz.

Nekomachi describes the pieces as fragments, created in spare moments over the course of six years, their origins now only partially remembered. The level of cohesion achieved by Nekomachi in fitting these fragments together is a testament to his talent and careful composition.

Following the release of 'We Were Here' under his indie rock and shoegaze moniker Stubai, Australian musician Matt Teffer turns towards completely different terrain with his debut ambient work as tsubai. Inspired by a journey to Greenland's Ilulissat Icefjord in July 2025, 'ilulissat' is a deeply immersive reflection on one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.

Named after the Greenlandic word for ‘icebergs’, the album captures the majesty and mystery of the icescapes of Ilulissat. Transfixed by the scale, shifting forms and colours of the icebergs, Matt returned home to Sydney inspired to translate his experience into sound.

Using nothing but electric guitar as its sole sound source, ilulissat weaves vast, glacial soundscapes through meticulously layered recordings. Patient movements and stillness give way to emotional swells, evoking towering ice formations slowly emerging from the mist before opening into expansive, soaring passages reminiscent of a seabird sailing the arctic air above the fjord.

Though shaped by the isolation of frozen icescapes, there are currents of warmth and humanity beneath ilulissat’s surface. Subtle melodies emerge from the myriad layers like light glowing and refracted through ancient ice. Composed on the opposite side of the world from the place that inspired it, tsubai carries the sense of wonder of Ilulissat across oceans and into sound.

The inspiration for this album comes from the many parallels between the presidencies of Donald Trump and Richard Nixon, both who stoked the flames of white fear and racism to elevate themselves to the White House. Both men abused the powers of their office and committed crimes for which they will forever be remembered. It will take an inordinate amount of work to undo the damage both men have caused to the balance of equality between white Americans and Americans of color, but we should never give up the fight. Because giving up means you’ve let them win.
